Species Information

General:
Dwarf evergreen shrub; stems prostrate, much branched, matted, 5-10 cm long.
Leaves:
Alternate, crowded, overlapping, spoon-shaped to oblanceolate, hairy to glabrous, entire, 5-12 mm long.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of solitary, terminal, bell-shaped flowers; corollas white to cream, 9-12 mm long, 5-lobed; sepals 5, oblong to spoon-shaped, 4-7 mm long, becoming woody and enclosing the fruit at maturity.
Fruits:
Capsules, egg-shaped, 3-valved, 4-6 mm long; seeds numerous.

Habitat / Range

Mesic meadows and rocky slopes in the alpine zone; rare in NW BC; circumpolar, N to AK, YT and W NT, disjunct in E North America; NE Asia.
